In 2001, Lenore Manderson, a medical anthropologist living in Melbourne, Australia, lost the use of her left hand while beginning to work on Surface Tensions, a book based on research on trauma to the body.  Nerve explores her struggles with her sudden disability and her journey to discover a new identity and sense of self.
